Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

Say a prayer for the gangsta…
Oh boy, Tobie is in for an adventure this morning. During yesterday’s water run to town Neighbor L saw a notice at the post office for a rabies clinic at the fairgrounds this very morning. Which is weird because on … Continue reading
Happy March!
It’s a beautiful frosty morning… Ironically the coldest we’ve had in over a week, first time I’ve lit the fire in several days. Ironic because I usually like to imagine March as the end of winter and beginning of spring: … Continue reading
Holy Procrastination, Batman…
It’s no secret to regular readers that I am in some ways a rather … I believe the term used to be “dysfunctional” … individual. There are certain things I’ll do almost anything to avoid. Even to the extent of … Continue reading
Gulchy Update
Okay, we were down for over two weeks but we’re back, though it might take me a while to get back into the habit of keeping awake to blog fodder. There are still some updates going on in the background … Continue reading
Hi, Guys…
Hello, my name is Joel and I run a damn-near-defunct blog called TUAK. And as of this moment I just might possibly be BACK! At least I have an editor block I can type words into. We’ll see how well … Continue reading

Claire Wolfe here. The good news: Joel is okay. The bad news: Boy, is his WordPress software screwed up. I volunteered & I’m in the WP interface poking around to see what I can see, but if I can’t figure … Continue reading
Okay, now I am very confused.
Replacing the thermostat with a new one did nothing to fix my problems with the bedroom heater. If anything, things got worse. Yesterday I woke to bedroom temps in the low forties. After breakfast and walkie I took the new … Continue reading
Great moments in poorly-timed choices…
True fact: The original prop spinner from the Spirit of St. Louis is displayed in the National Air and Space Museum, or it was a long time ago. I saw it when I was a kid, and found it very … Continue reading
All there is to talk about is the weather…
Also pretty common this time of year, just sitting out winter. Except for walkie time, of course… Story of a once-in-a-lifetime miracle: I actually correctly predicted the short-term weather for once. We got wind all day yesterday, big wind after … Continue reading
Check this out…
So today was supposed to be heavy clouds all day, with 1-3 inches of snow in the late afternoon or evening. Instead, it did this… All day long. It stayed cold, and the wind has really been whipping all day … Continue reading
Comes the storm, finally…
When we first went outside this morning there had been overnight rain but the crescent moon and stars were clearly visible almost to every horizon. Looked good, especially considering that yesterday was nonstop gloom. Heh. Yeah. I didn’t know more … Continue reading
Just ’cause I think it’s pretty…
We’re supposed to be in the middle of a week of winter weather. And it is a bit cooler than I would have chosen but otherwise it’s nice. Lots of sun, no wind, an absolute minimum of apocalypse. I know … Continue reading
Wow, that’s dark…
6:30 in the morning, post-breakfast, and Tobie is agitating for his morning walkie. But the view over the porch railing says it’s not time yet… It’s February, the days are palpably getting longer and it ought to be plenty light … Continue reading
I always feel better when they’re all full…
Unless there’s some good reason not to or circumstances just won’t allow it, I always like to keep my propane bottles topped off whenever I can – because I never know when next there’ll be some good reason not to … Continue reading
And here we go again…
I always check to see if reverse is working before I get the Jeep into a situation where only reverse will do. Until the time I don’t. And that’s when… …with an evil chuckle and a twist of his mustache, … Continue reading
I hate SHOT Show.
It’s been more than half a week since it closed and my video feed is still filled with “The Ten Greatest Shotguns of 2024!!!” or “The Greatest Plastic Striker-Fired 9mm (that’s just like all the other plastic striker-fired 9mms) Ever!!!” … Continue reading
Tobie is not a fan of coyote music.
They’ve been singing me the song of their people fairly close to the cabin for the past few nights. I’ve got tinnitus real bad and am pretty much deaf to high-pitched sounds so I can’t hear them when I’m indoors. … Continue reading
I’m out of shape…
No surprise – I’m always out of shape this time of year but I really got a chance to show it this morning… Neighbor L got another ton of wood pellets and this time there was no young guy to … Continue reading
When the ground crunches rather than squishes…
…walkie time is going to be better. The sky cleared right on schedule and it got seasonally cold overnight for the first time in over a week. The mud froze… …we stopped at Ian’s place to hang out laundry I’d … Continue reading
