Decided to go with varnish…

Exterior urethane, really. Couldn’t decide on a third color for the back door and finally decided I liked it the way it was, except the original varnish was pretty much gone.

So first thing this morning I sanded down the outside surface, which took the door pretty much down to bare wood. Then over the course of the day I hit it with two coats…

…but that surface veneer sucked up so much of the first coat things won’t end there. No way two coats are going to do it. I’ll leave the doorknob off overnight since I don’t need it to lock the door, then give it another two coats tomorrow.

So how many coats of varnish did Laddie end up with? Or isn’t he earning his nickname?

When we were discussing door colors I don’t think plain varnish was considered. But yes, I think it’s a good choice. You certainly have had a productive Lair Improvement season.

Dear Joel, I realize you are a frequently- thin- on- funds- hermit (and king of the scroungers) but that “back” door is an interior grade door with only two hinges. You really do need to put an exterior grade door there as literally anyone can give it a good kick and it will splinter. The cross bar mid height does help but in the end door is two very thin sheets of lauan plywood over corrugated cardboard zig-zag strips that are hot glued to same and a narrow wood frame around the perimeter and door handle area.

Keep an eye out for a steel faced door or at least one of solid wood rated for exterior use.

Terrapod, I know it looks like that but that’s not a light hollow-core door. It’s quite solid – and quite heavy. It does have only two hinges, true, but you’re not putting your foot through it.
