Well, at least that probably means no new snow, so no need to rush out to check the chicken wire.

How do the chickens handle low temperature? You mentioned that they are at least smart enough to remain inside. Do they eat more to stoke their internal fires?

    Stay warm Joel.

Good gosh! A lot colder in AZ than in MT. Stay cozy warm!

Mornin’ Joel: Don’t know what part of the rim you’re on, but here near Show Low we spiked down to -12 overnight. I fired off a note to friends in North Dakota telling them it wasn’t funny and to take it back.

  4. Joel says:

The chickens do eat more when it’s cold, but I can provide them enough pellets that they could get along without me till it warms up a bit. Unfortunately they also need liquid water, and I don’t have the means to heat their waterer, and so the Jeep is warming up to take me there right now.

The Rhode Island Reds don’t seem to mind cold at all, but I’m still concerned to see how the Leghorns deal with it. It is measurably warmer inside the chickenhouse, at least.

Wasn’t that cold here last night, but then again we got a half foot of snow.
