Sometimes the song in my head makes me sad.

Click is the last of the original cats. By far the smartest – the desert could never get her. But she’s got something wrong with her hindquarters. I’m trying to get her to a vet, but it’s hard to get a ride to a particular town on a particular schedule. It’s been going on and getting worse for months. She just sort of drags herself around now, never goes out, and lately she can’t even use the litter box. I don’t know what’s wrong, but she’s in pain.

And this evening I sat on the floor with her, and she crawled into my lap. And I started singing to her, I didn’t even realize what at first…

…and then I started to cry. Damn you, Paul Simon.

About Joel

You shouldn't ask these questions of a paranoid recluse, you know.

  1. You’ve probably figured out that I can be crude and/or irreverent at the drop of a hat – but I’m really sorry to read of this.

When’s the last time Click was even out of her territory? Does she know of such things as vets offices, pet carriers, and motor vehicle transport?

She’s among her ‘people’ – who can watch her back if/when she can’t. That probably counts for something.

    I’m sorry about your cat.

  3. T says:

Darn it Joel, now you’ve made me cry. I am so sorry. This has been a bad month for blog pets.

  4. Stephen says:

    My friend, I’m so sorry.

  5. coloradohermit says:

Darned if they don’t steal our hearts and then take a piece when they leave. Sneaky damned cats!

  6. Don says:

Joel, I truly wish for the best. But (there’s always a but), this may be the time to consider ending Click’s pain. I’ve had the same problem with two of my cats who were siblings. I’m much closer to the vet, can drive, and had the money. The costs of fixing the problem which may not be the same) were enough the vet suggested we put them down. As I said, I’m truly sorry and wish the best.

  7. So sorry! We lost our cat last summer. Circumstances brought us two new kittens right afterward, but my daughter still stops by the cat’s grave from time to time and says “Poor Samantha.”

  8. Claire says:

Oh no. But Click is so young, Joel. Maybe this is something fixable. And maybe — just maybe — you could explain your situation to the vet and they’d be willing to see Click with little notice?

I also realize we’re talking potentially serious $$ here, on top of everything else. Poor Click. Poor you. This is a tough one for sure.

  9. Joel says:

I still have most of the money people donated to me for glaucoma treatments, of course. My first ophthalmologist appointment is tomorrow, and after that I hope to have a better picture of what my money situation really is. I love Click very much, but (I only write this in public because she can’t read) she’s not more important to me than not going blind. So even though waiting might be doing harm, I can’t get serious about getting her to a vet until the end of this week soonest. After that, she goes and gets looked at ASAP if I can possibly afford it.

I’m sorry, Joel. Seems like if you didn’t have bad luck… sometimes you’d not have much luck at all.

But do consider that there are probably a million wonderful critters available who need someone to love and care for them. I’ve had to put down a good number of my animal friends, and it never gets easier. But sometimes that is the best.

And you most definitely do need to take care of Joel first. :)

  11. I have a feeling that you are a lot like me in some sense. My animals always eat better than I do, get better treatment than I do, and receive equal amounts of the love they give to me. At some point though, it is better to let them go quietly into that long goodnight than even attempt to recover some of their former selves (and suffer while doing so) They do not show pain the same way us weak hairless monkeys do, so when they are showing it, IT’S BAD.
Definitely take care of Joel first, but be prepared to let a good friend leave for better mouse fields and clover.

  12. KA9VSZ says:

They give us the opportunity to love even if people don’t. Damn, the screen needs cleaning…

  13. Just had to put Gizmo down last week. Faithful dog of 17 years. It killed me to do it, but it was time, she was suffering. Doesn’t make it any easier, but at least I know she’s not suffering anymore. Definitely take care of yourself first Joel. I hope Click’s problem is something the vet can fix.

    Aw, damn.
There are just some real shit-patches in life & that’s all there is to it.
