Sometimes you just need a big hammer.

So during the big storms of a few weeks ago a piece of the rifle range backstop’s caprock…

…came down to visit the paper target stand…

…and knocked it pretty definitely out of plumb.

I had other worries at the time, frankly haven’t been doing any pleasure shooting anyway, and didn’t expect a visit from Ian where the range would at least need to look presentable for his videos. So there the matter sat until this morning. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I was at first somewhat at sea as to how I was going to fix it, but…

Well…sometimes “hit it with a big hammer” really is the right choice.

Didn’t even take long.

In a battle between sandstone and a sledgehammer, the hammer will eventually win even if wielded by a geezer with bad shoulders.

Now I’ll go back with a shovel and a couple of wrenches, and putting the stand right shouldn’t take much effort at all.

Tobie wanted to help so badly I tied him off out of reach, which hurt his feelings until he saw that he could assist with bush removal instead.

And after that he was content to amuse himself.

You are certainly rocking the Tobi photos. He is such a cutie.

Nice job on the sandstone. One thing to keep in mind is if you come across some serious hard stone that you need to bust up, it’s easier on the shoulder to drill a few large holes then use some stone splitting wedges with shims.

Tobie’s expression looks like a dog version of that Harold meme.

I’m afraid that’s permanent. IRL his face is much more mobile and he’s a happy boi but his resting face says he’s hiding the pain.

  4. Couldnt you have just looped a tow strap around it and Jeep’d it away from the range stand?

  5. Joel says:

Don’t see how. If I could have rolled it over to get a strap under it, I could have rolled it away from the target stand.

Soil’s lookin pretty loose n sandy there.. mebbe you coulda dug a small tunnel under the rock and fed the strap/chain through?

Is this where Gun Jesus intends to fire his new Serbian big bangy thingy???

  8. Joel says:

    No, he already did that.
