Aw, hell. The dragons on Pern are wearing black today.

Anne McCaffrey is dead at 85.

I won’t say she was my very favorite SF writer, it’s been a long time since I read her, because I hate it when they get an idea and then beat it to death as she kinda did with the Pern books. But I did read and enjoy several of them, and The Ship Who Sang was one of my all-time favorite SF stories. RIP.

That’s the only story of hers I’ve read-was she old enough to be considered one of First Fandom? If not, she had to be close to it.

    “First Fandom”?

Ah, that must be what you mean:

Heck, if you stretch definitions to include some of my comic strips and certain cons, I would qualify, even though I’ve never been much into the strange world of fen.

  3. I remember reading several of her books.

    RIP.

I loved the Dragonriders of Pern and have read all of them. Some were better than others, of course. My favorite was “Dragon Singer” and the two that followed it.

Her son had been writing with her for some time, so I wonder what he may come up with on his own.

    RIP indeed, Anne.
