…dog urine first thing in the morning?
He has had what appeared to be momentary partial blockages in the past week or so, as well as one more spell of bloody urine. Neighbors asked if I had checked his urine for crystals, so this morning I had him pee into a bowl.
At first, right off the bat I thought there was a terrible lot of sediment in the bottom of the bowl but it turned out to be a glob of mud on the outside. There’s nothing obviously wrong but all in all it’s so murky – almost as obnoxious as horse piss, to be honest – I can’t really tell.
I’m starting to think more positively of taking him to a proper townie vet.
How does one convince a dog to pee into a bowl?
Ben, you hold it under him as he lifts his leg!
First of the morning pee is often stronger than that of the rest of the day, but that looks really strong/dark. If he’s continuing to have issues, especially after a week on the antibiotic, yah, a vet check may be in order.
Hard to tell, what with the muck in the bowl, could be a UTI. Could also be going into kidney failure mode, unfortunately. I’m thinking it’s vet time. Good luck LB.
Visiting a Vet would be a good idea. If you chose to do that, you might consider having him pee in the bowl (giggle) and then transfer that into a jar with a lid. Our Vet needed to collect a sample via tube the first time ($$), but we brought a sample the next time to avoid sedation. I don’t know if this means anything however our Pyrs always pee in fits and starts (marking the territory) – no blood after the Cranberry Tabs.
The urine in the photo looks very concentrated. How much water would you guesstimate LB drinks on a given day? One of my gsp’s had a UTI when she was 11/2 or so. I only really began to notice something was up because she started to stay away from the water bowl and her urine was super concentrated, dark and smelly. It took two treatments of antibiotics to get her squared away finally.
Sorry,it’s supposed to read 1 1/2 years old.
You follow him around with a bowl until he assumes the position, then slide the bowl under him. First thing in the morning that never takes long.
I don’t have to guesstimate, I measure it. This time of the year he goes through 3/4 gallon per day like clockwork. A little more than a gallon in the hot dry months.
talk to the vet and ask to pay over time.
if he is decent and loves animals he will do whatever it takes to get your dog well.
when we move i always ask around for vet recommendations.
Joel if you are going to bring a sample urine to the vet make sure to wash and sterilize the bottle as best you can to prevent false results.
