…and it’s not as bad as I feared at $2500. That’s how much cash I need to raise before anybody will pick up a wrench.
That’s for a new transmission: The price for rebuilding the current one could conceivably be less but it would be extremely time-consuming, knowing local contractors, and considering that I believe there’s severe mechanical damage it may not even be worth trying. Once steel parts start flying around inside that aluminum housing, the transmission’s resale value and rebuildability, if that’s a word, drops by the second.
Check on cost of a remanufactured one from someone reputable that has a real 1 or 2 year warranty. Might save you more.
I specifically asked for remanufactured. The shop owner, admittedly probably not the sharpest tool in the shed, seems to believe they’re not available for that vehicle around here. No way of knowing how true that is.
About 10 minutes of searching on the internet could answer that question pretty easily…
It always pays to know that people are giving you correct answers…
From what I can find on line, the $2,500 quote ain’t that bad.

At that price point, might it be worthwhile to look into the used truck market and see if you can just move on to something newer?
Given the rattletrap that the Jeep has become that was my first thought quite some time ago. But I really need a 4X4 and they’re like gold – and that was before the big market distortion of two years ago. A used 4X4 will cost several times a new trans for the Jeep.
And that used vehicle would come complete with a used transmission.
Jasper has a good reputation for rebuilding engines and transmissions:

Really dumb question — does the “donate” button on the right sidebar benefit you, even though it goes to a Gmail account that doesn’t appear to be connected? I wanted to help out, but I want to make sure it goes to you.
Yes – it’s clunky, but has to do with my lack of a bank account in my name. The person at that address and account is basically TUAK’s unpaid CFO and totally trustworthy.
Good enough for me!
Done.
How’s the tip jar coming along?
OK, I’m in for what I can stand right now. It’s kind of turning in to s##tshow November moneywise here on the last day of the month. I’ll kick in some more next month.
Will kick in tomorrow after getting paid.
Same here.
