So cool, in fact, that I just caught myself digging out a light hoodie. At 8:30 ayem in August I’m normally sweating in a cut-off work shirt.
I hate winter. And I never got back to trying to find out what’s wrong with the bedroom heater. Swore I wasn’t going to wait till it was a winter-prep crisis. Better get off my ass about that.
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

Yes, time to prep for colder winter. It was so cold here a couple of days ago, I was tempted to build a fire. But now it has warmed up again. But I am gathering kindling from the forest. I hope you can get the heater working.
Even though the pilot flame may look perfectly healthy to your eye, clean the orfice with an appropriate wire…assuming that you haven’t already tried that.
Are you using a millivolt thermostat? A standard 24 volt thermostat may use the 24 volt supply for operations, and will overload the thermopile output.
Easy test: disconnect the wires from the thermostat. Check the voltage between those wires; should be 500 or so millivolts. If so, short them together. If the heater fires up normally…….
I hope you manage to get the heater issue sorted out sooner, rather than later. The wicked weather that Mother Nature likes to throw at you will not hold off until you are ready.
