But I still think this is hilarious. A long-time reader sent me a link to an article about a line of ads pushing J-B Weld, a product I do actually keep around the Lair. He said ol’ Curmudgeonly Joel coulda been a star if only they’d cast me in the ads.
I replied that no, I really prefer to encourage people to throw away useful things. But the ads are funny anyway…

I live in a city that has bulk pick-up twice a year. That’s where you put your junk on the curb, then go see what your neighbors are putting out and taking what you want. Different areas of the city have different pick up days. For two weeks before pick-up, collectors and recyclers are out in force, driving up and down the streets checking the piles. By the time the city comes along to take it all to the dump, pretty much anything with saving has been.
There seem to be many amateur/unofficial recyclers in my area. I just put stuff out by the curb a couple days before my official pickup day, and it’s rarely still there when the Official Trash Man makes his rounds. It’s especially rare for anything made of metal to lay there for more than a few hours. Heck, I’ve had old appliances that were gone in minutes!
Frankly, I would much rather one of these folks pick up my stuff rather than have it carted off to the landfill. To me, this is true recycling!
Huh. I’ve left stuff out for years and nobody ever comes to pick it up. What a gyp.

You should put a “For Sale: $10” sign on it. It’ll be stolen within hours!
