Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

Interim Framing Party Report
We got the wall frames up, but broke up the party after a lengthy discussion on how to roof it because it was 1:30 and the sun was beating down and at 63 I’m by far the youngest member of … Continue reading

Okay. Had to do some running around this morning to gather tools. Bummed Neighbor D’s portable generator. Made sure it still ran after its trip in the Jeep trailer. (I’ve tripped over that issue before.) Borrowed Landlady’s nailgun and compressor. … Continue reading
No, really – guns for we but not for thee.
Hey, remember two weeks ago when congressional bodies were hitting the ground, and some guy named Loudermilk rushed to a microphone and said congressvermin should pass a law giving them the privilege of going armed anywhere they wanted? And then … Continue reading

Just checking… Last week’s terrible heat wave is a memory, but that doesn’t mean it’s exactly cool in the afternoon. So I’m using the little RV oven I set up outside for my summer bread. I’m still working on getting … Continue reading
A House Without Freebies…
…is clearly a house where Joel doesn’t live. 🙂 Can you believe somebody was going to throw this chopsaw away? Because the switch was intermittent. Open up the handle, tighten up a couple of electrical connections – nearly new! Didn’t … Continue reading
We’re throwing a party at the Lair!
The floor has been up and ready for walls for a week, but neighbors kept telling me they wanted a framing party. That meant I had to go around and find out a day convenient to everybody interested. So it’s … Continue reading
I’m having a philosophical discussion with myself…

“On the plus side, nobody actually beat him up.”
Since I never use the Book of Face, I have to keep being reminded who the hell Mark Zuckerberg is. Maybe somebody can clue me in to why anyone would want him to be president. But he’s making noises like … Continue reading
Don’t worry about it. My first wife was a ‘tard. She’s a pilot now.

There’s those legendary communication skills at work…
Time to refill my glaucoma meds. To do so, traditionally, I have to trek to the big town about 50 miles away. Normally I catch a ride with neighbors D&L, who were actually prompting me to do so – so … Continue reading
Becoming intimate with your tools…
A penniless hermit will find himself doing things he wasn’t taught to expect as a child. Like taking a moment in the morning to renew the duct tape wrapping on his long-broken plastic foot so it’ll go in his boot. … Continue reading
The Gulch’s weather likes its drama
Last week’s heatwave ended with a whole series of bangs, exactly as expected. A thunderboomer cell built gradually and then mostly went off to the NE to do its thing. We got not much more than a heavy sprinkle here, … Continue reading
When you have more, you spend more.
It’s an iron law. Three months ago I doubled the Lair’s battery capacity – tripled it, really, though two of the six batteries aren’t connected to the inverter – and so now I can run more electrical appliances if I … Continue reading
