Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

I wanna be a victim, too.
Seems like there’s good money in it. So there’s this prog comedian who posed with the bloody severed head of Donald Trump, which muttered something about “covfefe” to his little kid, who got all upset. Or something, I wasn’t paying … Continue reading
Racing the Thunder Boomer
After days of other things getting in my way, I started early this morning and knocked out the last four holes for the bedroom footers. Then I drove the backhoe to Landlady’s, fixed a spot in her driveway that’s been … Continue reading
Sometimes the right thing turns out to be the wrong thing.
Also: Shit. L posted some signs with the little moocher’s picture, and to everyone’s surprise she got a hit. Only to learn the dog wasn’t dumped, he ran away. And he did not seem thrilled to be going home. It’s … Continue reading
Mid-day rain meant this became an impromptu baking day…
Here’s my first attempt at homemade dog biscuits, There’s some canned cheese that’s been around here forever; nobody seems to like it much, so I thought I’d go ahead and make cheesy dog treats with it. I like’em, and LB … Continue reading
First rattlesnake of the season
I thought the chickens were acting more terrified than usual this morning. Went into the big chickenhouse to feed them and collect eggs, picked up the garbage can cover I’d dropped on the ground and found I’d dropped it right … Continue reading
Some assembly required…
I was completely sure this was going to be a fiasco, and in fact the driver had gone through town and was headed for Utah when he called for directions. But it smoothed right out once we got him turned … Continue reading
Useful stuff
Sometimes people send me stuff that at first I don’t think has much utility – and then later I wonder how I ever got along without it. I’m thinking of a high-tech flashlight somebody sent me going on two years … Continue reading
Dueling with sculpture
Personally I thought “fearless girl” was kind of cool. The sculptor who made the Wall Street bull did not agree. 😀 I looked for a decent picture of the pissing dog. To me it just looks like a lump of … Continue reading
I’m not sure I can talk about this on the blog.
When I was 17, I first got drunk (VO and diet root beer) at a new year’s eve party my older brother threw to honor the visit of his Navy buddy and his buddy’s wife. As I recall, my brother … Continue reading
It’s so cute and little!
Okay, here’s a cedar rat logistics puzzle: I want to borrow my neighbor’s backhoe. I could drive to his place and leave the Jeep there, but then I’d have to be completely done before dark today. I’m probably not going … Continue reading
Sorry, took a day off…
Didn’t feel especially well yesterday, plus it’s near the end of the month and my download limit is squeaking at me. So I just took a day to catch up with my Larry Correia reading festival. Sunday I got that … Continue reading
Some scrounging will still be involved.
When we first built the Lair’s floor supports, Ian and I bolted together a bunch of 2X12 sections into 3 16′ doubled timbers. That worked really well and I wanted to do it again but my supply of used lumber … Continue reading
Always obey the law, citizens…
No matter how arbitrary or ridiculous the law may be. …yeah, okay. Or at least be sneaky. 😉
The expression “oh god oh god” comes to mind…
You know, this is the first time I’ve ever built a complex structure with storebought materials at full retail. Ever. The materials for completing the exterior have now been ordered, and most will arrive on Wednesday if all goes well. … Continue reading
If all goes well, materials get ordered tomorrow.
Summer’s big project begins.
I try to imagine what the riot cop feels like…
At what point does he ponder that his armor and shield are plastic, that his principal weapon is a stick and his backup weapon contains far fewer bullets than there are potential enemies? Like ancient Greek hoplites – I imagine … Continue reading
“Thanks for all the weapons. Here, have some dates.”

LB was never into toys…
Not since I graciously permitted him to survive he outgrew his terrible chewing phase. Sure, when he was a puppy he had a regular treasure pile. But when he became a dog he put aside puppyish things. I couldn’t even … Continue reading
