Good day.

I now have a firmly-rooted square (Okay, it’s more of a rectangle) of concrete blocks, roughly 20 X 7, fenced with chain-link. I need to let the concrete set up on the gateposts before I can connect the last ends of the fence and hang the gate, and I need to string some netting for the top, but this will make a much better enclosure for the chickens.

Right now it’s bare dirt but that’ll change before a single clucker enters. I’ve been reading this great book that discusses, among a great many other things, a “deep litter” method for producing compost and giving chickens something useful to do when they’re not laying eggs, and this enclosure will be perfect for that. Also gives me the expanded space I need for more chickens, which is in the plan for the spring.

Next, my neighbor D has been after me to get busy on the new chicken coop, which wasn’t going to be much use until I had a place to put it. Now I do.

Congratulations on the new addition to the chicken project!
You know Joel, when I think back on where you were a few years ago, you have come a long, long way. Very well done. Your chronicles are a story of survival and vision, and you are making it happen.
    Congratulations.
