(grumble) Plan B…

I love the crappy market in the little town nearest where I live…

nobottle
…in the way one might love the cranky old uncle who lives in the spare bedroom at the end of the hall, and still want to put a pillow over his face one night…

Okay, so they no longer sell those cheesy 3-gallon water bottles. No problem. Plan B…

bottle
I swung by Ian’s Cave and grabbed my one remaining 5-gallon bottle, and I’ll just use that for LB’s water bowl while it lasts. That’ll spread the water out comfortably for a week.

Meanwhile it’s beginning to look like I’m gonna take a day out of the week and go to the big town about 50 miles away. I’ll probably need some trim lumber by then anyway, and that’s the only practical way to score it.

  1. Silly question asked by someone who has never lived in the desert: if the water has too high a mineral content to be consumed regularly, but is otherwise fine, and the weather there is such that you’ll be needing to drink more water (sunny and hot), could not the well water be distilled thorugh some sort of solar still appartus to provide at least enough water for the dog?

  2. Judy says:

Guys, I read somewhere, that solar stills don’t produce that much usable water.

Wow, only 30 to 60% productivity!

  3. Joel says:

Not a silly question, we’re having that very discussion in the earlier thread. Short answer: Yes, but as with so many things it’s not as simple as the DIY websites make it look. Solar stills work but their output is minuscule and they’re time sinks for tinkering and maintenance. Everybody tries them, everybody gives up. Right now it’s easier to haul water from town.

Smart N Final no longer carries the 3 gallon bottles as well.

Hey Joel, there may be another option, the Reliance Products Aqua-Tainer 7 Gallon Rigid Water Container. I have 4 of these containers as an emergency water supply for when the power goes out for several years with no issues. In fact one winter I forgot one in the trunk of a car loaded with water. It froze solid and expanded but never broke and I still use it to this day.

Another option is a Scepter water container. They are military grade so they should work.

I know the cost is more than you want to pay but the water containers you all ready have are failing so…
