They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.
Well, in Chaucer’s day it was thought that people looked like what they are or were.
Maybe they knew more than we figured, eh?
Owwww! Beer burns when one blows it through his nose! HA HA! I am glad Master Jabba got what he deserves!
This is an interesting case to me for two reasons – primarily because the population in Bell is heavily hispanic. I have to wonder why _no one_ seemed to have been aware of the ridiculous salaries, or why something wasn’t done about it. People seemed really angry when they learned about it – so why didn’t they do something earlier? Probably – they didn’t know. What rules/laws make the information unavailable? Why didn’t the local newspapers print it? Usually a reporter attends all city council meetings – but maybe Bell was too small and escaped notice. If there are rules/laws that allow the council to hide the info – that needs to be changed.
The other factor may lie in the hispanic population. I wonder what percentage is legal and _can_ vote, and what percentage is just unaware that _their_ action is a part of keeping government straight. Of course, with the latter, at least they have the excuse that they come from Mexico where they really don’t have much influence – those of us who have been citizens all our lives don’t have that excuse when it comes to our government!
Guess they never heard of “Recalls”…
