…because a long time ago he wrote a novel in which some people admonished some other people to give up cruelty to plants and learn to subsist on air and light, and I thought that was taking satire to a clumsy extreme.*

*I didn’t think it was a very good book then, and I don’t think it’s a very good book now. But one of my criticisms has proven inoperative. Mistakes were made. About Joel

“taking satire to a clumsy extreme”- you underestimated human stupidity, Joel. Don’t fret, you’re in good company.
“If she continues to thrive”?? It’s obvious she isn’t thriving NOW. I’d say she’s chlorinating the gene pool but it’s too late for that.
“If she continues to thrive” – I caught that too. In a discussion of the problems she has standing upright, “thrive” might not be the right word.
Her story should come with a disclaimer:
“Do not attempt in the absence of chlorophyl!”

It was just a throwaway joke, as I recall: a flyer somebody left under the heroes’ windshield wiper.
I haven’t read the book in a long time either. I found it forgettable, so don’t hold me to details.
