Over the weekend I got a birthday present from a generous reader: $60, totally unexpected and not already alloted to anything. Oh, yeah.
Virtually every dollar of money I know is coming in is already spent before I see it. It hardly ever presents any temptation. Found money, though…with found money, sometimes you can do something fun.
Mondays I sometimes catch a ride with D&L to town, if I need to do some shopping. Monday morning I lay in bed, thinking about that sixty bucks. I could:
a: Do the totally responsible thing, and put it in the Jeep tire fund.
b: Do the somewhat responsible thing, and restock one of the many commodities on which I’m running low.
or…
c: Do what I want to do.
I’d about decided on c: when I came down the ladder. Tended to the dogs, tried to boil some coffee water, and found that the propane bottle was empty.
It wasn’t unexpected. I kind of expected it to run out Sunday while I baked bread. And I have another full bottle, I’d never let myself completely run out of propane while there’s any alternative.
But still. The replacement is the last full bottle. It was a sign from Uncle Murphy.
Sigh – “somewhat responsible” it is.
Well… 🙂 Maybe just somewhat responsible…
For medicinal purposes, of course. 🙂 Very responsible.
For mental health and well being. Equally responsible. 😉
I agree with both. Mental health maintenance is part of “medicinal,” right?
Good call, Uncle Joel. That’s good snakebite medicine, too, as I used to tell my buddies in the Navy (when I was ashore in a barracks for awhile). “Damn! Thought I saw a snake! Better take some preventative (and swig).”
Never got bit once (well, by snakes anyhow). Some putative snakes may have been tricks of the light, but my thinking back then was that you couldn’t be too safe, although you could be too sober.
I live in a much snakier place now, but don’t require as much preventative. We grow, I guess.
And no, I haven’t been preventing snakebite, despite misspelling my own damned name. I really should proofread before posting.
🙂
