Magpul rattles its magazines at Colorado. Colorado flinches a little.

So the Colorado legislature wants to pass a law outlawing standard capacity magazines.

Magpul Industries, one of the foremost makers of those magazines, is based in Colorado. Oops. The management of Magpul publicly stated it wouldn’t stay where it wasn’t welcome. Goodbye, Colorado.

Hypocrisy ensued.

State Rep. Daniel Kagan, D-Cherry Hills Village, said he plans to offer an amendment Friday that seeks to soften the bill’s impact on magazine makers in the state.

“It needs to be clear that manufacturers will be able to still sell and transfer these high-capacity magazines to individuals in other states, the U.S. military and law enforcement,” Kagan said. “We want them (Magpul) to stay here in Colorado. It would be sad to see them leave.”

Oh. So Magpul is welcome to stay, keep paying taxes and employing people in Colorado. They can sell their product to people in other states – and of course to military and law enforcement – just not to Coloradans.

(The amendment renders the law meaningless. When I needed to buy magazines for my M1A but was forbidden to do so in the grand Caliphate of California, I was hindered…not at all, basically. But I digress.)

The management of Magpul, to its credit, didn’t back down an iota.

Richard Fitzpatrick, Founder, President, and CEO of Magpul Industries, said that regardless of any amendments that may be worked into the bill, he will no longer be able to continue to do business in Colorado if his core product is made illegal.

“Our company could not, in good conscience, continue to manufacture our products in a state where law-abiding citizens are prohibited from purchasing and owning them. ” Fitzpatrick said. “The passage of this bill will do nothing to enhance public safety, but will force us to immediately begin taking our business to another state.”

This isn’t quite what I was talking about the other day – it would be great to see them refuse to sell magazines to Colorado government entities – but still. It’s to their credit. Assuming they actually do it.

H/T to Claire.

  1. KA9VSZ says:

Will Magpul also stop sales to CO LEOs?

  2. Joel says:

I doubt it very much. They certainly aren’t threatening to.

  3. KA9VSZ says:

Too bad. Maybe if the LEOs start griping at the politicians, our leaders will get the idea that people are unhappy and might vote for somebody else. After all, the politicians’ carrer is the most important thing to them.
