The muleys are back!

There has been a sharp reduction in the number of cattle running around the Gulch. They’re not gone, just sharply reduced. Don’t know if he just moved them to better grazing, or if they’re on feed lots. Don’t care, as long as they’re not here.

And as always happens, when the livestock leave the wildlife returns.

ETA: Kent in comments is almost certainly correct that those two the IR caught are elk, not mulies. That would be the very first elk the game camera has captured!

  1. That sure looks elk-like in the GIF with the coyote…

I kinda wonder the same thing. They seem shaggy for mulies and they have that patch on their asses. Not sure, except they’re definitely not cattle.

  3. I’m pretty sure Kent’s right. I was thinking the same thing when looking at the thumbnail pic – but after seeing it larger – that looks like an elk-ish butt to me. Moreso than a muley – anyway.

My bonus of the day was getting to watch a couple big bullsnakes do a 10 min + courtship this afternoon. At one point they’d both climbed into a shrubby mesquite and were handily moving around in the tree up to 5-6′ off the ground. She didn’t seem receptive enough for consummation yet – but they sure took a lot of time and energy in a small area. For all I know they do this for days – given the opportunity. The female looked to be about 5′ and the male around 6′. All the while this is going on – btw – a couple quail and a rabbit came within several feet of the snakes at times – seemed as curious as I was! I was staying back about 20′ so I wouldn’t spook them – like a proper perv!

    That’s a cow elk 100%.
