Well, now we found something Laddie definitely doesn’t like…

I’ve had two behind-the-cabin projects hanging fire for the past few days and it was definitely time to get back to them. I’m shortening the chicken yard and repurposing it into a dog kennel. Used up my last sack of cement on the gate post. Now I need to finish the front, and I’ll fill the blocks for the other two posts when I pour the concrete for the back stairs.

Not going as elaborate cementing down the latch post as with the gate post, but I do have to drive it in. So I started banging on the post driver, and…

Oh, somebody didn’t like that at all. He’d been hanging around close by, not really needing the tie-out at all, until all that noise started. Then he wanted to see how doings in Nebraska might work out.

You ever wonder why ancient cities are always big mounds that need to be excavated? I got a kick out of this…

I’m shortening the two sides of the kennel, to improve clearance between it and the new rear porch. On the cabin side that presented no problem.

…but the other side faces the drainage ditch for the gully behind the yard. Over the years, as I dug out the ditch when it silted up, I’ve bermed that side higher and higher until the berm sort of became part of the fence structure. In fact there was old rolled-up spare fencing beside it, and so the berm had risen higher than the blocks supporting the fence and I had to dig it out to get to those blocks.

Turned out before I could re-set the corner block for the now-shortened enclosure, I needed to dig into the berm itself. And as years go by that berm will probably rise again – the ditch could really stand to be dug out again. As I move dirt and rocks and stuff around that corner very slowly rises, as (noticeably!) do other parts of the yard just through erosion of the ridge beside it. Maybe someday archaeologists will dig trenches and sift through my shit, like they do now with the First People.

Yes, that will probably happen someday. Then, as now, those archaeologists will analyze your shit in relation to their own present culture, and so will come to comically wrong conclusions.

😀 “The people of this culture worshiped a deity we can identify only as ‘Spam,’ and kept in their homes many metallic containers decorated with the deity’s name and filled with some organic material we believe may have been the remains of human sacrifices…”
