Another ebike milestone…

On the road to T&S’s to take care of their dogs this morning, we passed 1000 miles on the odometer.

What with the extended Monsoon and that little mud-related wreck we suffered mid-summer, I’d begun to fear I wouldn’t reach that this year. Happily I was able to fix the electrical problem myself but waiting for replacements for all the other broken bits took weeks off my riding this year.

I sent that pic to Big Brother when I took it – he did after all gift me the bike – and he sent back a picture of his bike’s screen showing almost 4000 miles. Showoff. 🙂

To quote a senile old man, and say this as gently as I can, ‘come on, man!’
Living in the desert has made your English atrophy. ‘Gift’ is a noun, Uncle Joel. He gave it to you.

  2. Malatrope says:

Uh, “gift me” is a perfectly valid English construction, at least back to Shakespeare…

From the dictionary, it is also used as a verb:

    VERB
give (something) as a gift, especially formally or as a donation or bequest:
“the company gifted 2,999 shares to a charity”

    Neener neener. 😉

Good for you, Joel! Um, the distance covered via electricity without pedaling doesn’t count toward your cardiovascular fitness, y’know. 🙂

Next, let’s talk about “impact” replacing “affect” and “effect” cuzza stoopid lazy “journalists” and then (shudder) “impactful”. Gah!

Dunno about your, but mine only seems to keep track of speed when the motor is going. Thinking about adding another odometer to keep actual track of mileage.

  6. Do you charge the bike off the Lairs PV system? Or do you plug it in at Landlady’s or something? Just curious if the Lairs power system has the ability to handle charging the bike.

Robert, the ebike takes the same amount of upper body effort as any bike, but you can dial in the amount of exercise you want on the legs…which makes an ebike the perfect exercise machine! The number of miles Joel is getting out of a charge tells me that he’s doing a fair amount of pedaling.

On flat ground you can pedal as much or as little as you like. On upgrades you pedal like hell and use the gearing, because 750 watts (or amps, it’s early and I don’t remember) isn’t enough to get me and an 80-pound bike up a steep hill without me stress testing my cardiovascular system. That’s when the bike stops masking how fricking big and heavy it is.

Yesterday evening I wasn’t really feeling it: there’s a lot of uphill getting to the plateau and my prosthesis socket wasn’t fitting just right and felt like it was abrading all the skin off my knee. So on the way back home I mostly either coasted downhill or played motorcycle with the throttle. There’s only one really steep uphill bit on the way home. But the throttle has to be used only in moderation and with an eye to how far you’re going because it really sucks juice.

My ebike is 500W and I use two 20ah batteries, one to go out and one to come back. There are significant hills in my area, and I have to pedal going up them and no other time. The effective radius (depending on which direction I go) is about 25 miles, but that’s on hard gravel and pavement.

One battery gets 32 miles and the other gets 26 miles on the same path. Same battery manufacturer, same rating, but one’s a later product. Why the difference I don’t know…the lesser one is actually physically bigger.

CZ, I’m sorry I didn’t reply to this. Maybe you’ll see it at this late date.

I charge the bike’s battery at Ian’s place because that’s where I store the bike. But early on I did bring the battery and charger to the Lair to see what effect it would have on the Lair’s power system. And the Lair’s system doesn’t have any trouble charging the battery. It’s just not convenient, since there’s no good way to get the bike down to the Lair’s hollow.
