Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

Should have, could have finished. But it was already three in the PM by the time I had steel and plywood ready to go out to the wash, I was tired and cranky, the sun was in my eyes, this … Continue reading

I tried to order more water bottles…

Spam recall!
Regular readers know that Uncle Joel loves him some Spam, and in fact I do go through quite a lot of it. So the recent Hormel announcement of a Spam recall literally hit home. And numerous concerned friends have emailed … Continue reading
Wow, it’s another Monday in paradise out there!
Don’t know how you guys put up with it, I truly don’t.
I am the scrounging king. I can do anything.
One thing I didn’t do at the end of last year’s busy building season was sort out all my scrounged fasteners. In fact until last week’s scramble to find enough bolts to assemble the new metallic target stand, I hadn’t … Continue reading
The hermit who couldn’t shoot straight. Or drive straight.
Slow day. I hoped to go to the hardware store in the little town nearest where I live, because then I could get the bolts and drillbit(s) needed to finish the stand for paper targets at the shooting range. But … Continue reading
In fairness, if we’re somehow forcing Kim Jong Un to murder his own people, we should stop.
Is that what this idiot was trying to say? I guess because without Dear Leader’s own-people-murdering skills the Norks would just dissolve into chaos and anarchy, so he’s duty-bound to keep doing it even though he’d rather be watching basketball? … Continue reading
Things don’t always go smoothly…

Private to anybody who knows Jeep parts nomenclature…

Got the metallic target stand done.
Okay, I knew I had a problem before I even knocked off yesterday evening… …because I was gonna need a bunch of bolts. And I didn’t have a bunch of bolts. Screws I got. Nails I got. Don’t really stock … Continue reading
The saddest thing about this video is that this Congressman will continue to enjoy his job.

“Could we move to the Breakfast portion of the morning’s festivities? Paleeeze?
All good things got to come to an end…
And the end is nigh for my burn barrel… It’s basically in two pieces now, it just has too much inertia to act on the fact. Gets great airflow, though. I have often thought that if I knew where to … Continue reading
That…was unexpectedly easy…
This is the layout for Ian’s New and Improved Private Shooting Range! Cutting up that fuel tank rack yesterday yielded me four eight-foot lengths of heavy-duty angle iron with feet welded to one end. I planted them in two pairs, … Continue reading
Wait. Now we’re getting statements from the lawyer of the lawyer who rolled over on the lawyer of the person the feds are trying to get dirt on.
Seriously. Still, it wasnât immediately clear what if any information Freidman could provide to investigators probing Cohenâs financial dealings. His lawyer, Patrick Egan, declined to discuss the deal and said he couldnât comment on what the plea âindicates regarding any … Continue reading
Dear Neighbor Ian: Thanks for the porch roof!
It’s so hard for us locals to find shade in the middle of the day. P.S. – Could you ask Joel to open the window? I can’t get in.
That was a fun way to work up a sweat!
I know I said the next construction project of the building season was the front porch, but I’m in a chicken-and-egg situation: The very first thing I need to do is tear out the existing porch and stairs, and then … Continue reading
Livin’ in a rabbit paradise…
