Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

Remember Robert Reich?
No really good reason you should, I suppose. He hasn’t been an active annoyance since the Clinton administration. And since then, he’s been nursing a sinecure at UC Berkeley. So naturally, he had a theory as to who was really … Continue reading

Progs to Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Eat more kale.
They’re terribly concerned for her now. “I’m very interested in this.” says Jeanette Bavwidinski, a community organizer in Pennsylvania. “I’m interested in what her daily regimen is. Like, what are you all feeding RBG? Is she getting enough fresh air? … Continue reading
Battery Day EXTREME
I’ve mostly been sitting around this month, waiting the cold out. Last week there was some justification for that, but this week the afternoons are positively spring-like. And yesterday, which was supposed to be battery day, came and went with … Continue reading
Here’s a shock. It’s the republicans’ turn to screw you…

Things that seem really incongruous now…

How do you measure winter?
Those of you who live in winter states, that is? In the high desert we can have extreme cold – we’ve hit -20o since I’ve been here – but the weather tends to be episodic. Cold as hell at night, … Continue reading
Anybody ever see a white Mule Deer?
I saw three muleys this afternoon, this time of year can’t tell male from female at a distance. The first one was close, I could have taken it with a pistol easily, and it immediately started pronking but otherwise didn’t … Continue reading
LB the Headless
I calculated this morning that of the six cats we’ve had here at the Gulch – all now dead – only three died in such a way as to leave a body, only two died non-violently, and only one died … Continue reading
I guess this is why music is important…
My musical elevator never really went to the top, for the most part I’m not entitled to an opinion about anything that happened musically after – well, – ever, really. But sometimes a particular song so perfectly encapsulates something you’re … Continue reading
Speaking of insensitive dog pics…
And we all know which lab is being a racist…
Good boy.
Ghost is staying with us today, he’ll go back home in the morning. And today, for some reason, he seemed happier with his lot in life. He got along with LB, he was positively playful, briefly, and LB reciprocated by … Continue reading

Ah, politicians. They waste time and money in the most entertaining ways…
Get a load of this… Democrats hold lessons on how to talk to real people Manchin and nine other Senate Democrats are up for reelection next year in states that Trump won. Much of the event appears geared at figuring … Continue reading

Cocooning through the cold…
We finally got some decent January weather. Look at this… Do you see that? Do you see that? It’s the end of January, and that’s all the wood I’ve used all winter long. I’m a little disgusted. I expected the … Continue reading
You broke it, you own it.
Raise your hand if you didn’t really expect the congressional GOP to repeal Obamacare this week. I didn’t, and even though I’m almost always wrong about these things I was pretty confident this time for two reasons: First, they’re republican … Continue reading
