Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

For a semi-retired guy, I sure keep gaining job titles…
Caretaker. Security guard. Gamekeeper. Now I’m the sexton. Got an email from Landlady yesterday evening. One of the original cats, who’s been living in the city, has finally found it in her geriatric heart to croak. All the original animals … Continue reading
Field Expedient Boot Repair (for the guy with only one foot)
Cleaning mud off my boots the other day, I noticed that I’d managed to wear right through the bottom of the left one… Shouldn’t have come as such a surprise. This is my left foot… Looks fine, except this is … Continue reading
A River in the Desert
I didn’t know Ian had posted this on Youtube. Found it while I was looking for the video where he and Karl re-enacted the Battle of Little Big Horn at their monthly 2-gun match. This is from the first time … Continue reading
I’ve really come to look forward to these.
Ian and his friend Karl often do “spy vs. spy” comparisons of historical weapon systems at their club’s monthly 2-gun match. The results can be entertaining as well as educational. This month it’s No4 MkI (T) Enfield sniper with a … Continue reading
There is no truth to the rumor that Ted Nugent was seen drinking champagne from Andrew Cuomo’s shoe…

A day for lifting heavy things
After I’d returned from town yesterday afternoon I had a flurry of things that needed to be done quickly lest Uncle Murphy spank. Locally the weather was absolutely beautiful.Rather than hide under the cabin as is his usual practice on … Continue reading

Things have been a little lean lately. Not bad lean, just lean to where keeping up with necessities is a thing to be constantly watched. It’s easy to let yourself slide on the things you’d previously stocked up on, and … Continue reading
Welcome to the party, pals? – redux
Seems like “police militarization” is the phrase of the week thanks to that unpleasantness in Missouri. Ran it through Startpage this morning and got over 25K hits for the past week alone. What some have been crying in the wilderness … Continue reading

Well done, good and faithful Claireistas!
The goal for Claire’s roof fund has been exceeded. Don’t let that stop you from kicking in, though. Total price is more than that, and it’s gonna run for a little while more.

Whoa. Not my smartest move ever.
