No more free meals for the chicken house rat(s)

Been meaning to do this for some time. Rats burrowed under the front wall of the chicken house, which not coincidentally is where the chicken feeder is…

I tried piling rocks and concrete blocks to no avail. Finally yesterday I was able to score a sack of concrete during the Monday water run, so…

Tobie and I got it done this morning before working by that south-facing wall got too hot, and that should be the end of that series of free meals.

i’ll bet you the little buggers find another way in. the can go through a hole the size of a dime.

  3. Out of curiosity, does doing chicken chores provide you with eggs for your own use?

Here in the jungle of Floriduh. There is a huge population of rats , racoons and possum. So when I built the coop , I buried the chicken wire below ground about a foot below ground level and out a foot. The critters in the beginning , would dig down , find the wire and move down the way . Finally giving up.
During the day , I let the birds free range as the yard is fenced and the dog is also out and about so no trouble with predators. Ha ha the dog is scared shitless of those fowl beasts but doesn’t let anything else in the yard.
The wild birds sure do love the feeder during the day tho when the chickens ain’t looking. Not to mention the squirrel population too.

Yeah, we put concrete and chicken wire under the fence of the chicken yard and the main door, but didn’t think predators would burrow under the walls. And they didn’t, either – but the rats did, even though on the other side of the building they could stroll through the cyclone fence without breaking stride.
