Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

If it’s high (and the trees suggest that it is) the snow can come fast and furious and deep. It’s a little early here, too, but above 4500′ it’s already deep (I’m at 3500′).
Malatrope,
I’m at about 6,900′ at the base of Pikes Peak and this kind of snow this early in the season is fairly rare, in fact the last time I recall getting more than 18″ prior to mid December was the October 1997 blizzard that dumped close to 3 feet on my side of town.
Eric.
Wow, I guess I should refrain from commenting as it seems to kill a thread. 🙂
Eric.
Nah, you’re fine, Eric. People just don’t check on Uncle Joel as often as they look at X.
I’m in Central Idaho, quite a lot further north than you. Latitude does make a difference. It’s been fully dark here for quite awhile, also. Starting on Friday, the temperature is starting it’s slide off into winter, and by the 19th the highs will be below freezing.
Ooops, extra apostrophe there. I seem to be doing that more often as the years pile on. Pain.
Wow, nice snow. I’m up here at 47° 30′ 22.2732” for a while, and no snow. I think it is going to be in the 50Ëšs today with a little sun as well. My site is up at 48Ëš and minutes, and they have had some snow. We did not get our usual Halloween blizzard this year. But cold has settled in slowly. Our weather has been whipsawing back and fort for about a month now. We really need snow — or moisture, to be more accurate. Joel, I hope the water fix is working and that the tank is filled, the sink gauge is reflecting same, and that you are ready for winter. Happy Thanksgiving.
