Claire Wolfe here. The good news: Joel is okay. The bad news: Boy, is his WordPress software screwed up.
I volunteered & I’m in the WP interface poking around to see what I can see, but if I can’t figure what the problem is (and that’s likely, as I’m no techie) and how to remedy it, I’ll beg help from somebody who actually knows what they’re doing.
If any trusty WP mavens out there would like to offer assistance, please leave a comment. Comments aren’t showing up to the public, but they’re visible to TUAK admins.
ETA: Help MAY already be on the way. So hang in there, please.
Thanks,
CW
Good news he’s fine. I dropped an “X” in comments because I couldn’t see anything. FYI – just started getting email notifications today for the past 5 posts if that pins down when it started going wonky.
Oh, good! I was afraid it was at my end. Um, that didn’t sound as sympathetic as it sounded in my head…
Thanks Claire! I was purty worried about the old guy.
Thanks for the update. Was worried about Joel. Good to hear you’re voice to Claire
Thanks for giving Joel a hand in this.
And FWIW some of us would love to see you continuing your old blog on the regular.
Eric.
Is he using some kind of aftermarket WP package, or is he using the native WP site? If he’s using the native stuff, I’d start by stripping the site down to a vanilla state, and add in until you find out what’s screwing stuff up. I’d hazard a guess it’s one of the widgets? I’ve had those screw my WP site up in the past, but never to the point of it getting completely nuked. Also, can Joel start up another site? If not…then the account is screwed up. If he can, it’s the WP page that’s the issue, or something on it. Feel free to shoot me an email if you need any more help, Claire. Dunno if you remember me, but [CONTACT INFORMATION REMOVED NOW THAT COMMENTS ARE PUBLIC AGAIN]. IAC, good luck with it, hope it gets solved fast.
Sorry for the twisted electrons in the WordPress.
Bless you for the info, Claire. Had me worried, especially since he was playing with a gas heater. Tell him to leave the damned sight glass open.
Think of it as a night light.
I have clues for him.
Can’t post comments att.
Thanks Claire! Wonky goings on here- pleased to hear all is well (sort of).
Toby, go find the cavalry!
Hope you are able to get comments visible and posts by Joel to post.
Since the 13th the comment counter keeps going up as people post, only nothing is visible from my end as a daily visitor to the Gulch.
Even on your kind post, the counter says 8, yet displays nothing.
Praying for success.
Claire – thank you. And I miss your blog. And I was worried about Joel, so thank you
Thanks Claire.
Sounds like you’ve got assistance, but contact me if you need more. I DO have a little WP experience.
Super!
Thank you Claire. I am clueless.
This was definitely a nice way to start my day! Thanks Claire!
I had some wonkiness with WP earlier this week. Removed all the plug ins and slowly added them back with their most recent updated versions.
HIGHLY recommend UpDraftPlus for auto-backups so you can restore to last good version if needed.
Yahoo! Comments are appearing once again. Good work Lady Claire and any others who have been helping. I am clueless about WP and have stayed well away from blog hosting services.
UPDATE:
Hi, Joel here. Things are moving. Readers have noticed that comments are back – I finally noticed it, which is why I’m commenting here. The software needed severe updates and is still not entirely updated: For example when I try to make an actual post I just get a blank page – which is still probably better than the lengthy list of error messages I got two days ago.
Long story how it came about but TUAK is getting actual professional help. It just doesn’t seem to be at the very top of their priority list. TUAK will live again, please exercise a little more patience. Hopefully the next update will be in the form of a real post. I could do that now the same way Claire did but it’s a pain. and I don’t have any more information than I’m giving you here.
Claire here. Thanks Anonymous and everybody who offered help or said similarly kind things. Any credit for improvements goes to those “others who are helping,” not to me. All I did was find a way to post when Joel couldn’t. Hopefully he’ll be back at it very soon.
Lets see… OK, Joel comments on the 22nd.
On the 23rd it’s not Joel this time, it’s Claire. Got it (I think). 🙂
My initial concern gives way to realization of how much I really appreciate seeing all those who come together here, and in good communities elsewhere, when assistance is most needed and valuable. A certain cohesion, while seeing so many formal structures and institutions racing toward disintegration.
