Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

Who do you think you’re fooling?
NASA eyes plan for deep-space outpost near the moon Um…guys? I know all your engineers quit at all, so maybe that’s why you may have overlooked one small thing. You can’t have a “human-tended waypoint” near the far side of … Continue reading
The Economics of (Whining) Envy
Okay: First off, I live in a 200 square foot cabin, which is roughly the size of one of this behemoth’s windows. So when I say I completely disagree with the writer of the screed “Huge Houses are Morally Wrong,” … Continue reading
On all the bread comments…
Thanks for all the responses, guys. I’ll be going over the suggestions. I’m at about 6000 feet altitude so that could have something to do with (makes it awfully hard to cook beans, I know that) and of course the … Continue reading
Let the meltdown begin!
Tried something a little new this morning. My neighbor D asked me if I wanted to come with him to the big town about fifty miles away. Truth is, even though there was nothing on my running shopping list that … Continue reading
Bread Bleg: Okay, I’m confused.
Yesterday was my third bake since moving in. The first was not good, for what I thought was an obvious reason: I didn’t do anything about proving the yeast, and the room was too cold for proper rising. The second … Continue reading
If there had been no Nazis…
…It would be necessary to invent them. The beautiful thing about Nazis is that it is impossible to go too far in vilifying them. Political correctness simply does not apply: There’s nobody left of offend, and even if there were … Continue reading
This could explain a lot. I’ve always had cats…
Maybe I should section my brain this evening and check it for parasites? Compared with uninfected men, males who had the parasite were more introverted, suspicious, oblivious to other people’s opinions of them, and inclined to disregard rules. Hey, Click! … Continue reading
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command…
I’ve been re-reading Victor Koman’s Kings of the High Frontier, so you know the voices in my head that most hate NASA have been dominating the internal dialogues lately, right? And then this morning I read Carl’s post right here, … Continue reading
Normally I’m not a Huge Nuge fan, …
…and I do notice that he characteristically manages to make this about his own complete awesomeness at one point. (Though, damn. He’s still looking good for a guy older than me.) Otherwise, this is pretty much my view on the … Continue reading
Hee. Good luck explaining THAT scar, dumbass.
But I do wonder: Was she actually aiming at his ass?
Well, it’s been months now…
…and the boys have still not fully renegotiated their territory agreements with the local coyotes. Most mornings I need to help them get outside in time for the 7AM business meeting, because, dammit, there’s Something Out There that needs a … Continue reading
Hee.
If this guy actually gets the nomination, he’s in for the worst few months of his life. The Dems will kill and eat him. Since I’ve held a grudge ever since the “contract with America” betrayal, part of me hopes … Continue reading
Weather, and its effect on making a living
Today was a perfect day for working on the computer, because it was sunny but too cold and windy to want to play outdoors. I get occasional opportunities to make a little cash on my ‘pooter. But this laptop is … Continue reading
It’s the same old song…
But they look so scary! And anybody can buy them! Terrorists! Some say it’s a major loophole in the law. At gun stores, you have to get a background check before you can buy a weapon. But online in most … Continue reading
Neighbors and Renters from Hell
Got to thinking about this with a post from Claire’s blog – she’s having trouble with a noisy neighbor who’s going to wake up with a karaoke machine’s head in his bed, one morning real soon. Then over to Sippican … Continue reading
The Chair yields five minutes to the Honorable Senator from the NFL…

I must own one of these.
Srsly. it’s for my Wall of Kitsch. I just gotta. I’ve got an NAA mini-revolver that has just sat on a shelf since I moved here. Back when I lived with people it was my “take your hand off my … Continue reading
Up to our collective ass in stray dogs!
So yesterday I got a call from my neighbor H. “Do you know where your dogs are?” As it happened, I did. “Oh, wait,” she said. “Doesn’t matter: You don’t have any females, do you?” No, I don’t. It seems … Continue reading
Sorry about that…
Cloudy day, so I figured I’d come back to the ‘pooter after shit-shoveling. Then I got a chance to make some cash, and went for it. So I haven’t been home today. And now I’ve gotta run get the boys … Continue reading
