Fortunately it hit him in the head, so there was no damage.

I’m not the recoil junky I was when I was young, but I like to think that even at my most heedless period I’d have at least paused to consider possible consequences before agreeing to go along with the joke.

If, that is, someone back then had handed me a TC Contender chambered in .500 Nitro Express.

Hoss, here, does not take the time to do that.

Wow! Now here is a person who has never had any experience with big (as in elephant/rhino sized) game ammunition. Having been on the gun team of a large zoo one of the firearms that I had to qualify on was a Winchester .458 magnum. The .458 magnum is smaller than the .500 nitro express and I have seen people knocked off their feet when shooting it and not ready for the recoil. So all I can say is this guy was lucky not to have broken his hand when the gun tore loose.

What an idiot. And who would be dumb enough to order this chambering in a hand gun? He’s lucky the hammer spur did not end up in his forehead.

My dear old dad had a very old .500 double. It was known to dislocate shoulders. It weighed about 12 pounds, I think. Handgun? There’s a threshold for sheer stupidity that such a device bounds at warp speed.
The first ex- Mrs. Buck was fathered by a guy who did the dangerous game thing in Africa. I shot his Holland and Holland bolt in 458 Mag. That was fun. I have been known to draw the bolt on a .510 DTC fixed to an AR lower that didn’t boot like that .458….it didn’t cost 5 figures, either.
The most recoil thing I have ever shot in a handgun was a .45/70 BFR loaded with some variety of Buffalo Bore insanity. That was made of utter stupidity.
I have a Ruger .45 Colt Blackhawk that I had occasion to ramp up to flat primers but not to the bursting point.
That’s about as hot as I like a handgun to go, ever, anymore.
Nope, my big game cartridges are all piped into rifles type things now. Usually those with heavy barrels.
Speaking of which, my NEF single shot is due back from Remington any time now with a new .45/70 barrel. The .500 S&W barrel didn’t have the bullet choices I preferred but with the 525 gr. bullets it kicks like dads Nitro. I don’t even wanna try the 700 grain bullets……..

    But I’m going to anyway.
