Ouch

How do you hurt your back in bed? Alone, I mean.

I’ve got one of those back wrap hot pads, but this one seems to require a microwave. And so maybe after it stops raining I’ll trudge up the ridge to Ian’s place…

Grumble.

Ouch indeed! 🙁 But it is not that difficult to do. I woke once with my neck so badly out of place that I could hardly do anything except cry. Called in sick (the only time I ever did that) and drove myself to the chiropractor 35 miles away. Just getting there was a miracle, since I couldn’t move my head and should not have been driving… but there was no real alternative. The doc crunched it – a memorable experience – and told me to wear a neck brace for a week (along with the heat packs and so forth). I got awful tired of explaining the stupid thing… but the pain was gone by the end of the week and I never had that happen again. No idea on earth what I did to it in my sleep.

Either a random muscle spasm or, like ML, you just slept wrong. It will likely pass, regardless of treatment or lack of.

    Oh, they always do eventually.

    It happens.
I need to replace my mattress (it’s beginning to have that U shape in the middle), but cannot afford to.
Roomie has a better one in storage, but, of course, we need help getting it here AND UPSTAIRS!.
Until then, I sleep somewhat diagonally…

I find that sneezing is particularly dangerous for me.

the last time I threw my back out, I did it by rolling over in bed. Woke up very hard and fast. I got surgery shortly after that, and although the problem sure as hell isn’t GONE (its been five years) , I can move about without that searing pain lancing down my leg.

I try to not move in bed. Or any other time, come to think of it. Gave myself sciatica five weeks ago trying to zero my new scope; still hurts. But the scope is dead on, goshdarnit! Followup doc appt in four days. Sigh.

    Drugs are your friend, Joel.

I always wake up broken after a day of heavy labor, like planting trees last week. I paid for that in spades.

  9. Paul Bonneau says:

I had a major spasm trying to pull my socks on one morning. Like someone whacking my back with a baseball bat. It was all I could do to pull the cover back over myself, lying there. Since then I have been careful to stretch my muscles before getting up.

Joel it’s just another sign that the warranty has expired. :^) Like you and the rest I get the aches, pains and spasms too just by doing little things. Sleep wrong, lift something wrong, pivot while shoveling dirt, et cetera and wham I’m looking for the heat pack and aspirin. I forget who said it but they were right, getting old ain’t for the faint of heart.
