The boys and I were out the door at 6:30 this morning, which for the record at this time of year is before breakfast and at best halfway through coffee time. Ghost, who likes his routine unless he decides to shatter it, was dubious at this rather shady innovation. Little Bear just saw a Jeep ride, and didn’t care ’bout no stinking schedule.
The occasion was D&L’s place. D’s daughter has been visiting for a week and went home this morning. This meant an early-morning drive to the big town about fifty miles away to catch a shuttle flight to the big city. Since supposedly the Homeland’s security vitally requires the same passenger-humiliation procedures for a 10-seat puddle jumper as for an international flight, she needed to get there hours early which meant an oh-dark-thirty departure time. Which meant dogs and horses didn’t get fed and stalls didn’t get mucked out. Which meant Joel and the boys were in the Jeep early. Since it has rained All Stinking Week, the mud in the stalls was ankle-deep except in high traffic areas, where you could vanish like the villain in a Tarzan movie. Which did in fact feel like some of the worst parts of old times. I kind of miss my thrice-weekly horse visits. And the resulting money.
Speaking of mud, Private to Landlady: The section between D&L’s and the turn is currently in a state of Nearer My God To Thee. The Jeep went sideways twice, and once I really thought I was heading for the fence. It will improve before the middle of tomorrow, but we should definitely plan on a transfer at the gate.
Now for the good news, D continues to improve steadily and may be home by the end of the month. Which looking at my calendar, appears to be maybe less than a week! I’ll be glad, I miss my friend. It will be a long time if ever, though, before he regains his usual vigor and we will need to sit on him from time to time to keep him from hurting himself trying to do the usual.

It’s nice to learn that D is getting better. I would hate to think of all the good thoughts and prayers going to waste, Kidding aside, I am glad he is on the mend.
Those passenger-humiliation procedures that you write about are such a wast of time You stand there like cattle waiting for your chance to get questioned/searched/prodded/groped. Meanwhile the average airport employee, who hasn’t been cleared or searched aside from some simple background checks, walks in with what ever in his lunch bucket or under his jacket… Security is nothing more than a version of kabuki theater meant to satisfy the public that something is being done for their safety.
I’m glad to hear that D is improving. Did they ever find out what the infection is/was?
Not really. Thought is that it was released by an abscessed tooth he had pulled.
That’s scary stuff that something so simple as a tooth pulling could cause such devastation. I’m darn glad that all mine are long gone. 😉
Yer a good man Charlie Brown- take care of your friend.
