Paging Dr. Anslinger, Dr. Harry J. Anslinger…

(CNSNews.com) – Nearly six million Americans – or 2.5 percent of adults in the U.S. – suffer from “marijuana use disorder”, according to a new study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

This finding has nothing whatever to do with politics. Nothing. NOTHING!

The study was released as a record number of ballot proposals to either legalize or decriminalize marijuana have been proposed in 16 states this year, according to BallotPedia.

Now drink your beer, Americans, and let the smart people drive.

  1. Judy says:

And the number of alcoholics? You can not legislate away that kind of behavior or Prohibition would of worked…so would the ban on prostitution and abortion. Make it legal and tax the hell out of it and it makes the Mafia/Cartels ineffective. On the other hand, how are the alphabet agencies going to finance their illegal/unconstitutional activities.

  2. Interesting – this keys in to a small degree to a comment that I decided not to leave over at BHM when Claire wrote a short while ago about legalisation.

Briefly – back in the mid 90s I had the ears of several national organisers for NORML as a result of some conversations I’d had with a state NORML rep. I got a last minute call that these folks were coming through town and they wanted a meet-up – part social and partly because of some of the thoughts I’d passed along about NORML getting heavily behind MMJ.

I’d expressed that I understood all of the benefits of going with the MMJ emphasis but that I thought the unintended consequences were higher than they realised. After going thru a basic litany – some of which Claire and the commentariat covered well in that piece I referenced – I closed with a suggestion that I could even think up a more jaded and evil unintended consequence. I suggested that I could conceive of a .gov someday deciding all these people with their permits could wind up as ‘wards of the state’ for their ‘condition’. The article Joel links might well be a harbinger of that coming around – or an effort that direction.

Sounds farfetched – I know. But what nowadays in terms of these infernal politics isn’t?

My suggestion to the NORML folks was to go long and hard on the MYOFB angle – that if it was a win it’d at least be a good one. I didn’t know anything about the guy at the time – but one of the people traveling through with that group was Pete McWilliams.

The meeting was short and started going awry the minute I got off the phone. I knew we had a to-do going on at the house that eve – so I’d invited them up. When I got off the phone I mentioned to one of the housemates that some NORML people were coming up – she took on a horrified look and explained that our other housemate had invited a bunch of people from her work – some of which were members of the sheriff’s posse and were all into that lawn order stuff. Tried to call back and warn the NORML people but they’d already left – so I caught them out in the parking area and explained that tonight any herbal material was outside only and not around any kids. They were offended despite my apology and over the course of the evening managed to offend all the lawn order types too. Nothing but feelings were hurt and some of us managed to have a fairly good time despite it all.

So if you’re gonna’ throw a garden party – I wish you a lot of luck…
