Remember a couple of weeks ago when I linked an article about the fall of the last gun ban in the last American territory?
Well, it seems somebody in power liked that ban just the way it had been.
Residents of the Northern Marianas Islands, a U.S. territory, will be paying a tax of $1,000 per gun as part of a sweeping gun regulation package was approved.
Gov. Ralph Torres signed the gun tax and regulation bill into law Monday and stressed that his first priority is the safety of law enforcement and the community.
“It’s something that none of us want, and we want to make it as strict as possible,” Torres said in a statement.
“The safety of law enforcement and the community.” Only one of which is armed. Also, I wonder what he means by “we.”

I’d guess it’s “them” . . . as opposed to “us”.
What a Stupid tax that punishes the poor. I suspect this will be headed off to court soon and if it comes before the same judge there will be hell to pay. (I hope)
That right there would be your ‘punitive tax’. Wasn’t there this thingie with tea in Boston Harbor a couple years back? There is no agreement as to what constitutes a ‘punitive tax’, so there are no laws against it. Which leaves only ‘civic disobedience’, which is a tough act.
The good burghers of the Marianas Islands have spoken, and since they are elected officials they must speak for the majority (if not the plurality) of the populace.
One thing about a Representative Government is that it was chosen by our ForeFathers as a way
of avoiding the mean domination of the majority over a minority.
Which works kinda/sorta okay in a nation/state which exceeds a certain minimal level of population … but in an island community?
Folks, you’re just screwed. The only option is to look for a spokesman at the Federal level.
Huh. Like THAT’S going to happen!
(Why we vote Republican)
PS: You can move to OREGON! We could use some more Republicans here.
Just like in DC. Settled law is never settled if the left doesn’t like the outcome. They don’t care how many times the courts strike them down, they only need to win once. Eventually, they will get the right judge or the right 5 out of 9 justices to back them up. THEN it will be settled law.
