NOW we’ll see if Ghost wants to be friends…

Landlady brought a most wonderful gift last weekend…

Three-pound pork roast, which I’ve been thawing in Ian’s fridge since then. I have no use for three pounds of roasted pork all at one time, of course, so…

…and two of them are already wrapped and headed back to Ian’s freezer, to rest with the Brahmas. The other will be heading for the oven very soon. Like in time for lunch.

Speaking of the Brahmas, I’ll be experimenting with separating the meat of one of them from the carcass and great nauseating globs of fat today, as well. The hope is to render it all down to something usable, then probably store it for winter stew.

And there’s one other food-related baking experiment for later, which I’ll share if it works. Or probably even if it doesn’t.

Yup, got my running around done early and I plan on spending the bulk of the day’s productive time cooking.

Looks good enough to eat alright. Bon apetit !

Years ago, we roasted one of those Boston Butt roasts on the bar-b-que pit. The fat was cut off and I fed it to my dog after it had cooled off. It was hilarious – he looked at me with eyes large, head tilted to the side, slowly chewing, his every expression saying, “My Gaaawwwdd – what IS that ? More – MORE!”

RIP Ringo – you were a helluva dog.

Wow, you had a dog that would chew and appreciate treats? Mine use the time-honored snap/gulp/look for more technique. Though Little Bear does at least have the decency to kiss up. His approach is sort of “I love my daddy, who gives pork.” Ghost is more like “I like pork. Gimme.”

You need to get… or bleg… a pressure canner, some pint jars, and can that meat. It’s way easy. I have a whole shelf full of canned venison right now. I want stew? chili? Open a jar and it’s already cooked, tender, and when canned with a little salt and pepper, seriously tasty.

I just read your comment above. My dog knows the sound of a cheese wrapper being peeled off, a zip-loc baggie (of cheese) being opened, and even the sound of cheese being run across a grater. It’s uncanny. No matter where he is in the house, I only need hint at the telltale sound and he will drop everything and come stand right by me staring at me to toss him something.

Funny, the way dogs have their alpha/submissive relationships, when I have food, especially cheese, is the only time he’ll actually look me in the eye for an extended time. It’s like he puts the whole pack rank thing on hold and watches me carefully for any cue that I may be about to toss him something.
