    Well, maybe the other half *know* the system is rigged.

    But I doubt it.

    Well of course the nominating system is rigged! We have this screwy cobbled-together primary system ran by different rules in each state. But then the primary winner might not even be the person actually nominated at the convention, because each political party gets to make its own rules for its own convention, and apparently they can even change them on the fly! So the “smoke-filled room” effect has always loomed large in USA Presidential politics.

    Beyond that, when the popular election is finally (and thankfully) all over, we have the antiquated Electoral College which has the theoretical power to toss the election results entirely. (But that’s a whole different discussion.)

    The parties are private clubs, they can set their own rules and they can do it behind closed doors. The surprising part is how many people will give them money and support.
