Weekender Neighbor S brought up some channel stock, and we used it to stiffen that wounded crossmember and get it back to some sense of its duty. Also the top of that angle brace in the foreground was all loose and had spat a bolt, and it’s tighter now.
The rack still wags, but it does it as a unit again the way it always did. My brilliant improvisation of yesterday wouldn’t have lasted another windy day, it was all bent to hell already.

Judging from the stress cracks at the upper left of that picture, I would guess that you are still looking at long term issues with that rig.
Yeah, it’s at the end of its service life but it’ll take time (and money, of course) to replace. Talk now is of a ground rack, which can take numerous forms depending on budget and preference. In fact locally in the past ten years the trend has been away from towers. Racks really need to be supported at the corners, or the wind will eventually break them down.
I’ve always relied heavily on duct tape and baling wire – but that job call for plumber’s strapping tape! Not that the baling wire wouldn’t work fine for that – you understand. I always make sure to keep a few rolls of that strapping tape on hand – it’s like DIY hurricane strapping!
(just kidding around – the older I get the more anal I can get on repairs and fabrications. Life’s either too long or too short for half-cheeked worksmanship – depending on how you look at it!)
