I’ve always thought this was the saddest park in America.

Standin’ on the Corner Park (opened 1999 in Winslow, Arizona) is a public park, commemorating the song “Take It Easy”, written by Jackson Browne and the late Glenn Frey, and most famously recorded by the Eagles. The song includes the verse “Well, I’m a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see. It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin’ down to take a look at me”. The park contains a two-story trompe-l’œil mural by John Pugh, and a life-size bronze statue of a “life sized man with a guitar from the “Eagles” song “Take it Easy””[1] by Ron Adamson standing on a corner with a guitar. The park is surrounded by a wall of bricks, each with a donor’s name on it, and a story by each of the donors describing their fondness for Winslow.[2]

And that’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to Winslow since the Transcontinental Railroad stopped using steam engines. I wonder what’s the average age for young people moving away – and which direction they go.

I mean, it’s not sad because Winslow is nowhere. I like nowhere. I’m pretty sure the town was chosen for mention in the song because it’s the very essence of nowhere. And the syllables matched the beat of the song.

No, what makes me sad is that the stupid song came out the year I got out of high school. And it sucked. And whoever’s responsible for this park actually thinks Winslow needs a claim to fame and that this is it.

  1. Steve in CA says:

Is the flatbed Ford always there?

  2. Joel says:

I wondered the same thing. It would be difficult to keep it clean enough for a permanent display, but I notice the street paint for the parking space is the right size.

  3. Judy says:

Every time I’ve been through Winslow the truck has been there.

  4. Kentucky says:

In the satellite view on Google Maps it appears to be there, but not when you go to Street View.

It’s there in the Wiki page for the park.

  5. Malatrope says:

Very kewl! The last time I was there, a couple of decades ago, I called my wife (four states away) while leaning on that lightpost you see on the left. I swear by all that’s Holy that that same red flatbed truck was parked there!

  6. John of the GMA says:

Not to mention that the locals got heartily sick of tourists constantly asking, “But which corner IS it?” Finally they all got together and said okay, THAT one, dammit! THAT’S the corner!

  7. Titan Mk6B says:

Change the words to Standing at a gas pump in Winslow , Arizona and that would describe my experience there. Probably gave some gas too since I was out of the truck.

  8. Matt says:

Well, when the youths leave Winslow Arizona, it probably is not for Springerville or Show Low. I’d go with Flagstaff, Phoenix, or possibly Tucson.

  9. B says:

I went by thre a few moths ago. As I was driving through town, I said”If they were smarth, they’d have a corner….”

    And there it was.

    Kinda anticlimactic, really.
