Meet Crazy Cora.

100_1355
Cora is in custody for her own protection: Somebody shredded her comb overnight. I’ve known something was up with Cora for some time, because she has felt so unwelcome around the other hens she has actually taken to using me as a body guard. (It is impossible to explain to her the irony and false assumptions inherent in this action.) But seriously, she has been rushing me at the door of the Fortress of Attitude lately, and running to the feeder to stuff herself whenever I’m standing nearby. She weighs next to nothing. She hides inside the coop most of the day. I rarely see anyone picking on her, and when I do they mostly seem to be reacting to her spastic and very disruptive behavior. Which came first: The aggression or the psychosis?

I don’t know but it’s clear somebody tore her a new one. Also clear she wants to eat but doesn’t feel free to do so around the other hens. Probably there’s a good reason for that.

Of course if she doesn’t lay me an egg or two once she’s had some feed-up and time-out, I’m going to personally kill her. Because the pullets are coming on line, and those childless hens who have until now existed solely to keep Seymour company are reaching the end of the road. So…poor choice of body guard, I guess.

“poor choice of body guard, I guess.”

Once at a zoo, I saw two chickens purposely parading themselves just out of reach of a caged baby lion. I could see no other explanation for that behavior except to purposely torment the cat. That greatly increased my respect for the brainpower of birds! So if a bird can understand humor on some level, perhaps they can handle irony better than we might think?

Speaking of crazy, how’s the Addled one doing? Is she still around or graduated to the stew pot?

Adie is actually #1 on my suspect list of Cora abusers. She’s the only one I’ve actually caught driving her away from the feeder. Which means her cute index has taken a severe hit, and once I start shifting hens around she may be stewpot-bound.

Lol have you considered a camera in the chicken coop? You could stream chicken cam…hehe.

Chicken cam would require power and a good internet connection, I might try it with my birds but I have only one of them.
