Sore yesterday. Kinda sore this morning.

Managed to wear off the bottom part of my stump, which fact began to show up day before yesterday actually but today it’s really trying to get my attention. Had to stop (whoops, had to stop typing to go out and chase a bunch of mama and baby cows out of my yard. They’re wrecking stuff, and slow to get the message…)

(ahem) Sorry. As I was saying, I had to stop and think back on my activities this week, because it didn’t seem to me I’d done anything all that strenuous. But repetition is also bad when it involves heavy weights, and the only way to fill this guy’s horse watering trough is with buckets from rain barrels*. That’s always hard on a one-legged guy’s stump. Also on Monday I did get tempted into an old-fashioned long walk into the nothin’ to see “what’s over there” in a place I don’t visit much. So okay, I did sort of incrementally earn a sore stump.

Also, I’ve got “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” stuck in my head for some reason, which surely ought to be punishment enough for whatever I did to deserve it. But there’s probably worse to come.

Anyway, I did get paid yesterday. They want the same service again in July, and I told them that would be great. I’ve got things to do today, but I’m going to try and keep the back-and-forth to a minimum for a while.

*this guy gets a surprising amount of mileage from rain barrels off his barn, though the water seems kind of nasty to be given to livestock.

Well, depending on how long that water has been sitting in the barrels I can easily see it being less than pristine.

Do the critters seem to be hesitant to drink it?

  2. Joel says:

Somebody sure was drinking it, though I didn’t personally witness the act.

How far does the water need to be transported from barrel to livestock tank ? I was wondering if siphoning with garden hose could be done, As long as the source is higher than the outlet, I think it possible.

We used to drain a large indoor aquariam with a pair of garden hoses, approximately 50 foot length in travel if I remember correctly.

Water is heavy and sloshes all over when carried in buckets, that is WORK !! I hope you find an easier solution soon.

Any prospect of making a filter for the rain water barrel? As for buckets, at the risk of starting a thread of puns, any chance of making a yoke to carry them?

Joel there are blister pads that come in sealed packets in different sizes. The feel kind of like a wet cool gel and provide cushioning. They have to be held on with tape or gauze. If you put one on on a day when you knew you’d be very active could you avoid stump pain and damage.

  6. Joel says:

I’ve got lots of cushioning, Zelda, thanks to all you generous readers with the amazing gelsock bleg earlier this year.

This was really just careless dressing on my part. The prosthesis is at least 20 years old and it has held up exceedingly well but the socket doesn’t really fit very well at all. So…

I wear at least one nylon sheath and a stretchy stumpsock under the gelsock. All my new gelsocks are the same but some of the older ones are thinner and the stumpsocks, being scrounged and donated, are all over the place for size. If I take the time to stack everything right the prosthesis fits fine and I’ve got good mobility all day. If I don’t and it’s too loose or tight, then other things happen. If I’d known I was going to be carrying heavy things back and forth Monday and Tuesday, I’d have been more careful.
