First I want to apologize if anybody got any wrong ideas from the last post, which was admittedly a bit vague. Big Brother’s wife died last weekend after a long illness. BB spared me the drama of what was probably a drawn-out tragedy, so it came as a bit of a shock. Many years ago when I was in a hospital for months, BB wore himself out worrying over me and I could only try to imagine what this had put him through.
I tend to deal with that sort of thing by working outdoors. So while wading through a great deal of encrusted dirt I got the Jeep’s new driver seat installed…

Clearly between now and summer I’ll be getting some seat covers for it. Black vinyl isn’t going to get it in the summer sun.
Then, work done, it was time to play.

Took the AK out to the wash with a target and some tools and got it zeroed. Due to a bit of vagueness as to exactly how I was supposed to get the new rail parallel with the barrel, that took a while and quite a lot of fiddling and ammo. But now the bullets go where the red dot tells them to and everything is Locktited down.
I do need to come up with a fixed buttstock – I always liked the folder but it isn’t a lot of help with the raised optic. If I can’t scrounge one from one of Ian’s piles of old AK parts, I may end up carving one from palletwood or something.

There is a cheek piece that can be bolted on to that folding stock. Damned if I can remember where you can locate them but I’ll try to find it and let you know. Barring that I may have a Wasr wood stock around here somewhere?
Your big brother sounds like one mountain of a good man. I’m so sorry for your loss.
Sympathy to BB and You on the loss. I wish we could send you both care packages of hugs and comfort. Maybe he’ll come and visit you at the Lair.
For now, pull an old t-shirt or sweat shirt over your pretty new seat back.
Seems a pretty reasonable price. I know you don’t need the rest but spares are always good.

Is it possible to flip the old wire stock over so the wire rises instead of drops?
Would that be too much rise?
Phssthpok: No, that wouldn’t work. The trunnion doesn’t go into the receiver upside-down.
Klaus: That’s good to know, thanks.
Strong Soviet rifle need use wood from industry, make fine stock. Keep rough for good grip! Save wire for emergency when can burn wood for stay warm!
Joel your elder brother is certainty a good man and one to ride the river with. Loosing a loved one is a hard burden to carry and not sharing that burden because he wanted to protect you shows how much he cares about you. My sympathies go out to him.
As for the stock, Magpul makes an aftermarket folding stock that may just be what you are looking for.

Plus there is a Magpul cheek riser that is designed to fit it.

maybe if you were to put these on your wish list…
Seems that Magpul has damn near everything these days, and good on them.
The notion of a walnut monte carlo stock on an AK makes me chuckle, which I suppose is a good reason for doing that. But I don’t have an AK to do it on.
Condolences to your BB and yourself Joel. It is readily apparent that there are strong and good hearts in the family. Keep an eye on BB, it takes time to work through loss even if it was anticipated in his case.
About $35 for the cheekpiece to add to your existing stock. http://amd65tech.com/Products.html
I like the wood stock that Klaus pointed out. That would turn your weapon into not an assault rifle because it doesn’t look scary, so no one can get hurt.
Sorry for your Big Brother’s loss.
Cheers
