Still getting a lot of weather. Overnight rain, morning wind. I have no idea what the wind will blow in. Smart money says I won’t like it very much.
By winter standards it isn’t even cold out. Would have gotten a lot colder without the rain and overcast. But between the damp, the wind and the lack of acclimatization, I’m breaking out the longjohns.

First fire of the season. Wish I’d spent more effort dusting off the upper stovepipe; I hate the smell of burning dust almost as much as I hate the smell of hot metal. To heat up the cabin most efficiently, I roasted my lunch and dinner at 6:30 this morning. 🙂
…then as soon as I turn the gas off I open the oven door to salvage the heat. Small cabins rule in winter.
None of this matters overnight because the bedroom, unlike the main cabin, resides snugly in the mid-20th century. Thermostats are among the unsung wonders of western civilization.
Your lunch and dinner roast looks wonderful! Made me hungry. After a snowy dreary long weekend I’m celebrating a sunny day by cooking a pot roast in the sun oven.
Using the heat from cooking is a great idea and as for the cooking, your food looks great. Regarding the temps… We have snow in the forecast tonight/tomorrow morning. It’s not gonna stick, but winter is coming…
Out of curiosity, where do you reside, within 50 miles.I understand if you don’t want to say. I live in kingman, went to Payson on Saturday,had a little snow on the way back before flagstaff. Wish I still burned wood for heat.

coloradohermit which brand of sun oven do you have? and how long have you been using it?
Hi Zelda. I have a Sun Oven brand and have used it for 6 or 7 years. My only complaint is that the interior space is fairly small so you couldn’t cook something like a turkey or 2 dishes. yesterday was quite cool but the sun oven still got up to 350* and the pot roast was excellent.
