Breaking rocks in the … hot sun …

Remember the earth-shattering kaboom? Holy crap, of course you don’t, that was three months ago! And in three months I’ve accomplished next to nothing, because that kaboom didn’t do the trick. The tractor still gets stuck every time I take it into the trench behind M’s Dome.

Finally decided the problem wasn’t going to resolve itself no matter how long I procrastinated. The situation with that rock really calls for a jackhammer, but we don’t have one.

What we do have is a Makita hammer drill. Four hours later I can testify that that isn’t enough to do the job in a reasonable length of time. But who ever called me reasonable?

That should take care of that obstacle.

Unfortunately, that’s the small one. The next problem is that the trench itself is simply too narrow for the tractor to make the turn coming out from behind the dome. I’ve got dirt filling all the rear now; that’s been done for quite a while. But I can’t turn the tractor enough to proceed to the far side. So for my next trick, I’m going to see if I can back the tractor in and use the backhoe to pull down the side the trench and widen it enough for passage.

But at that point it becomes a job for a shovel. That will leave too much dirt in the trench, and with the front bucket down the tractor is waaaay too long to push the dirt where it needs to go. But maybe I can do some of it with the backhoe.

Meantime …
