Yup, it has been in the seventies for three straight days. Yesterday it brushed 80o briefly!

And you know what that means, boys and girls…

That’s right! The pear tree, the single survivor of our five-year-ago experiment in fruit trees, blooms prematurely! No doubt just in time for the next night-time frost to kill all the buds, stunt the tree, and ensure no slightest possibility of fruit for another year!
All is right with my world.
Seriously, it is. I never expected any fruit from that tree, it’s been tried over and over. But I like having it there. And the weather this week is simply wonderful: Neither cold nor hot, hardly any wind, even the sun is muted with a high haze. I’ve been out cutting roadside brush just to be outdoors – and I’m going out to do it again after lunch. Winter is over, and life is good.

Anyone wanna bet on how long it takes Mother Nature to tell Joel:
“Fooled you again, sucka!”
and he has to dig out his winter gear?

Have you considered Prickly Pear or Figs?

I see the fence around the pear tree, a lot of critters trying to eat it?
Elk and cattle are death to fruit trees.
What anonymous said – figs especially. I am hoping to create a space for a fig tree. You really, really, really can grow fruit trees, it’s a great place for them, but you have to pick your varieties and rootstocks carefully and you have to plant them in basins, protect them from the wind, and protect them with fencing. Maybe everyone can contribute a few dollars for trees and you can try again, this time planting adapted varieties correctly. Trees from WalMart or your local hardware store are all wrong.
