The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, Explosives, Drugs and Keeping Your Stuff

How does this work? Time after time after time the brave boys of F-Troop embarrass every other federal alphabet agency by their very existence, let alone their ineptitude. The feds’ tame newsies still haven’t been able to ignore Fast & Furious into oblivion, and you’d think we’d be looking at a new bunch of fake hearings about how ATF ought to be eliminated entirely.

Instead:

Attorney General Eric Holder has granted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) authority, for a one-year trial period, to seize and administratively forfeit property allegedly involved in controlled substance offenses pursuant to United States Code Title Blahblahblah [which] is, among other things, often invoked to seize and forfeit bulk currency, where no drugs are found.

It happens again and again! There seems to be no idiotically damaging thing ATF can do, that won’t increase its influence and power. What’s with that?

And this is absolutely precious…

AG Holder’s rulemaking announcement declared that such changes are exempt from the general notice and comment requirements because the department determined that the change does not affect individual rights and obligations.

No, how could it possibly affect individual rights? Used to be, ATF had to at least lie about something you did before they stole your stuff, and now they can just take it and claim it might have committed some undefined crime. And what difference does it make that they’re not even responsible for drug enforcement? When did jurisdictional problems ever stop them from sticking their d*cks where they don’t belong? So yeah, for once Holder said something with which I agree: This change doesn’t affect individual rights, which were already completely screwed.

H/T to Codrea.
