Wow, yesterday and today the wind has been howling. Temps in the 40’s or – actually mid-fifties right now, which is good because this is the day D&L decided to top off their haybarn. I just got back, covered with hay and feeling like it’s January again. Hay day needs to be still, not 40 mph. You know?
Laddie has been insisting on tagging along more often lately, so he came and got his ears scratched by the strangers. He’s great around people, not so much around dogs. Fortunately Butch and Zip were inside today or he’d have threatened them with bodily harm, and ol’ potato-bod has nothing but attitude to back that up with.
I’ve been bringing their hay sweepings home with me the past few times – it works better than straw for nesting material, and while it lasts the hens break fewer eggs.

Your lucky Joel, up here in the wilds of Central East South Dakota we have a raging blizzard going, two feet on the ground right now with five inches predicted tonight and three to four tomorrow… damn crap! I have a snow drift at my back door that is above the door. Winds blowing past forty mph. I can’t even see across the street to the nursing home there because of the white out conditions. Now ya see why I want to move south where it is a little saner and warmer.
In April? Sheesh! And that’s why I live down here.
We have snow coming in tonight. There is still snow on the ground, although it has been melting. I still have drifts and piles, but can see some ground for the first time in too long. In Montana, it can pretty much snow any month. Keeps the riffraff out. * *
The beauty of using hay is that the chickens will also eat any stray gress seeds. Free food!
