A Dollar a Watt!

Hooked up with my weekender neighbor S this morning. He’s gotten into solar electric installations in a big way, to the point where he’s able to stay employed at it full-time.

I asked him, “How much to buy a solar panel like the one I got from you before?” I got that one on a labor swap: He’d had it left over from another installation.

He said, without the slightest hesitation, “$170.”

I think my mouth fell open. “That’s a 170-watt panel!”

“Yup. Dollar a watt, that’s what I’m paying now. I’ll give it to you at cost.”

To which I replied something to the effect of, “Cool.”

That’s what I paid for the charge controller, which is normally the least expensive single component. So what I said earlier about siding? Yeah, forget that. The proceeds from the Winchester are going on the roof. I already forked it over.
