Yeah, it’s been a long time since I did a slice’o’life post with photos. So today I finished hauling the lovely filth for Landlady’s new fruit trees.
We’ve had our disagreements, but all in all I like this old guy.
Looking over my beautiful back yard…
The three elements of Hugelculture, as I understand them: A big hole in the ground, a bunch of rotting wood at the bottom to hold moisture, and a bucketload of really serious organic material. Put them all together, they spell mother.
Getting from Landlady’s place to the shit-hills of the desert involves climbing one very steep hill. The tractor doesn’t have any trouble getting up it, but it always overbalances on that big backhoe and scrapes along with its front wheels in the air. This is disconcerting, and makes it difficult to steer. I think some big counterweights are missing. Anyway, in order to get up the hill I always scoop up a load of sand from the wash. Then I dump it at the top. It’s happened a few times.
And then, just to celebrate, I went and got a load for my own little tree. Reaching very gingerly over my septic barrels to dig the hole. Just out of frame on the bottom is the outflow from the grey water pipe.
