QoD – “Yeah, that’s what it’s about” edition

And then the irony… We’re asking countries like Russia and China – countries known for spying on their own citizens – to turn over an American citizen accused of … wait for it … revealing that the United States is spying on it’s own citizens. Countries that we have routinely denounced for … spying on their citizens and demanding they be returned when they leave… We’re through the looking glass here, where the United States of America is calling on Russia to return someone who revealed information about the program by which Americans are spied on.

MArooned

When Snowden went public and everybody started thumping their chests and yelling “traitor!” my heart sank. I don’t know or care anything about Snowden – maybe he’s a hero, or maybe he’s the biggest traitor since Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that what he revealed, which wasn’t all that big a secret in the first place, is something that should have been trumpeted from every rooftop, discussed and denounced in every coffeeshop, and put a definite stop to no matter what the cost. Instead, our rulers were (at first) able to turn the discussion around until it was all about Snowden.

And then came the “where’s Waldo” adventure of the past few days, when one nation, satrapy and jurisdictional district after another got to very publicly diss the government of the U S of A, very publicly airing their reasons why. And considering the civil rights records of those countries, the irony does indeed flow like honey on a warm day. And the story corrects itself…

People. Seriously. Remember when we were the good guys?

Thank the heavens for the interwebz

even if we know that all we say on it will be saved, scanned and if key words are seen, read and listed…

without you few individuals on the web, it could be all too easy to lump all your countrymen into a borg like aggregated blob of true believers in a jack boot on every face and free drone strikes for all.

I’m trying to think what a British spiritual equivalent of “Gulch” could be

Ghyl / Gill? Syke? Grain? slack? coire/correy/cwm/combe? dene? dell?

This side of the Irish Sea, we don’t tend to have the huge and in accessible lowland peat that the Irish hermity types are blessed with.

Never thought I’d see the day where I’d regard China and Russia more favorably than my own country.
