I have a nephew somewhere, and when he was a little kid he used to really annoy me. While watching Saturday morning cartoons (are there still Saturday morning cartoons?) every time the station ran a commercial for some toy he’d start yelling “I want that!” very loud. I wanted to kick him.
I got to thinking about him just now, when it occurred to me that I have a similar reflex. If I see an internet ad or review on some gun, my normal reaction is “Yeah? Izza gun. I have a gun. Don’t need another.”
But if I see an ad or review on some knife – almost any knife as long as there’s no tanto blade, which I hate, my inner obnoxious boy shrilly yells “I want that!”
And I happen to know I already possess more knives than guns.

I’m the same way about knives. I just counted – – 11 of them on my desk as I type this. More in the desk drawers.
I have that disease as well. I call it a ‘collection’, but I’m not fooling anyone, least of all, me.
I’ve started collecting straight razors and old sharpening stones. Never know when you’ll need a really close shave.
Joel, I resemble that remark!
I have an I Want That reflex except it applies to scavenged gear. The problem is that I rarely get anything super cool…yesterday I found some Australian cammies for a fat person and a pair of throwaway snow camo bottoms. I think it’s a disease that some of us get that we feel salty when we acquire a bunch of crazy junk from all over.
