WTF? Is this a joke?

A few days ago I mentioned that for quite some time I’ve been getting repeated search terms for something that just shouldn’t be drawing as much traffic as it is.

Since then it’s gotten downright crazy. Here are a couple of screenshots from just a few minutes ago.

I keep trying to think up an explanation for this that makes any sense at all, and it’s just not coming.

It’s not harming me in any way I can see, except for skewing my stats. But what’s the point?

I could see if someone said to their bible study (or any group of people), “you all should go to a site called joels gulch and find a piece he did there called (insert whichever of the search phrases here)”

Does your stats function allow you to quantify your visitors by geographical region or other demographics? That might provide some interesting insights.

jc: That sort of thing happens sometimes. But that post is only a link to Claire. I didn’t even say anything. There’s no rational reason for hundreds of people to follow that link.

Beth: Alas, no. I even tried to load sitemeter just so I could find out who these people are, but sitemeter isn’t being my friend.

August 14th and 15th are the independence days of Pakistan and India, respectively. If you could break it down to geographic regions, I suspect you’d see that most of those hits are coming from South Asia. “independence day” is always a peak search term this week of the year, according to things like Google Trends and such. More than a billion people celebrating independence day this week, and you’re probably just getting some search engine spillover, since your post now appears at the top of Google searches for “thoughts on independence day”. All it would take is an Indian or Pakistani school to assign its students to write an essay on their thoughts on independence day, and blammo – lots of people searching for the same term.

So I’m being invaded by Pakistan?

Because, y’know. That would be weird.

As long as none of them show up on your doorstep wanting to be like you…….nothing ruins a perfect independent hermit life like a herd of invading wannabes.
